Lines & Wrinkles

Lines & Wrinkles

As we get older, lines and wrinkles begin to appear on our skin. Lines typically appear on the face, in areas that are commonly involved in facial expressions such as around the eyes,  mouth and on the forehead. There are some external factors that can make lines and wrinkles appear earlier, or appear more pronounced, such as chronic sun exposure, smoking, dehydration and lack of regular skin moisturisation.

A number of skin care habits and products can help to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles, such as wearing regular SPF protection, avoiding direct sun exposure, smoking cessation, eating a balanced diet, ensuring good levels of hydration and regular moisturisation of the skin. In some instances, individuals may feel particularly self-conscious about any lines or wrinkles and may wish to seek further medical treatments to reduce their appearance. There are a number of treatment options available, which aim to reduce the prominence of wrinkles and make the skin appear smoother and plumper.

Mr Ioannis Goutos is an expert plastic surgeon with a wide experience of assessing individuals with aesthetic treatment goals. He takes particular pride in assessing all aspects of each patient journey, including physical, social and psychological factors. He is a technically skilled surgeon, with the ability to perform a number of surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures. Mr Goutos is well placed to make a thorough assessment of each patient and recommend the best treatment plan for them.

About this condition

Wrinkles can appear anywhere on the body. They are most noticeable on the face, but can also appear on the neck, hands, arms and legs. As the skin ages, the production of new skin cells slows down and there is a reduction in the amount of elastin and collagen produced (connective tissues, which helps to give skin its structure and natural ‘stretchiness’). Additionally, as we age, the skin also loses some of its ability to retain moisture, and can become dry more easily. Over time, this causes the skin to appear looser and causes lines and wrinkles in the skin. This is all a normal part of the ageing process.

Exposure to UV radiation from sunlight and smoking can both accelerate this process. Chronic sun and air pollution exposure can lead to an excess breakdown in the collagen in the skin and smoking reduces the production of new collagen. Furthermore, smoking can result in lines and wrinkles that are more prominent and appear at an earlier age.

In addition to good hydration and nutrition, moisturisation and avoidance of smoking, there are a number of medical and surgical treatment options to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles. These include:

  • Muscle relaxing injections-these target the muscles responsible for repeated creasing of the skin
  • Needling techniques – the use of devices with small needles to make multiple tiny perforations in the skin helps to promote collagen production and regeneration of the skin to make it appear rejuvenated and smoother.
  • Laser therapies – use high beam energy to cause controlled damage in the deeper layers of the skin, which triggers collagen and new skin cell production, helping to restore a smoother and firmer texture to the skin.
  • Filler injections – can be targeted in areas of lines and wrinkles to help lift the tissues underneath, aiming to make the overlying skin appear lifted and smoother.
  • Endolift – a special type of internal laser procedure that gives effects similar to a face lift by triggering remodeling in the superficial layers of the skin.
  • Body contouring surgery – contouring or liposuction procedures can be used in areas of the body such as the neck or upper arm. Excess fat and skin are removed and then the remaining tissues are redraped to give a smoother contour and shape.

If you are seeking further treatment or advice about lines and wrinkles, it is crucial to speak to an experienced clinician who will be able to assess your target areas and discuss the most suitable treatment options for you and your aims.
