Radiofrequency (RF) needling represents the latest modality of needling available on an outpatient basis.

It combines the benefits of ‘micro-needling’ or percutaneous collagen induction (PCI) as well as radiofrequency.  It has a wide array of indications and can be used to improve scarring as well as achieve skin rejuvenation. It involves the use of a device, whose handpiece includes small needles, which produces tiny open channels within the skin. When the needles are activated and are inserted in the tissue, energy in the form of radiofrequency (RF) is released.  This modality stimulates collagen production in the treated area and can successfully address texture, tone as well as the overall appearance of the skin.

RF needling can also be used in conjunction with other types of restorative treatments, including topical and surgical interventions.

Mr Goutos is an expert plastic and burns surgeon, with extensive experience in a number of aesthetic procedures, including needling. Radiofrequency needling is one of many treatment options available following full assessment and a discussion about desired outcomes.

About this treatment

RF needling techniques can be used to help improve the appearance of:

  • Sizeable/visible pores
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Stretch marks
  • Dull skin tone

You may experience some redness or flaking in the treated areas of skin following a session of RF needling, but this should resolve after 24-48 hours in most cases.  The interval between treatments varies between 4-6 weeks depending on the indication and treatment goals.  For most individuals, it can take up three sessions to see full notable results. Maintenance treatments can be performed over a period of time to maintain results as well as obtain further restorative benefits.

A major advantage of the radiofrequency needling modality is that it carries a very low risk of rebound darkening or ‘post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation’ (PIH) of the skin, which can be seen following other energy based treatments including lasers. This makes it ideal for a wide range of skin subtypes and indications.

Many patients find that RF needling techniques give optimal results when combined with other resurfacing/restorative modalities.

FAQ

We know having medical, surgical or cosmetic treatment can seem daunting and it is natural to have questions. We are here to ensure your comfort and safety at all times. If you are unable to find the answer to your questions below, then please do not hesitate to contact us so we can help.

The main side effects from RF needling, include minor redness/irritation and dryness/flaking on the treated skin, which most commonly last for a couple of days. Sometimes individuals also experience small amounts of oozing and minor bruising. There is also a small risk of infection, which is miminised by the use of proper cleaning and sterile equipment.  If you have a history of cold sores, it is advisable that you prevent reactivation of the virus responsible for flare-ups by taking the appropriate medication around the time of your treatment.

You may be able to experience some benefits after the first treatment; nevertheless more substantial results can be noted following a course of treatments. Courses are routinely taken consisting of 3-6 sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart.

For the first few days after each procedure, the skin will be sensitive to sunlight and chemical products. Therefore, it is vital to avoid direct intense sun exposure; you are advised to avoid products that contain retinol or any chemical peels for at least 72 hours.  Furthermore, application of a moisturiser containing vitamins A, C and E is advisable.

Radiofrequency needling can be used to treat scarring and other skin conditions in conjunction with many other modalities.  These include PRP (platelet-rich plasma) injections and Q switched Nd:YAG laser treatments as well as endolift.
