Any surgical procedure will involve risks of scarring, infection, blood clots and swelling post-operatively. There is also a very small risk of having a reaction to the general anaesthetic. These risks are reduced as much as possible through careful pre-operative assessment and planning, the technical ability of a skilled surgeon and the used of sterile equipment.

A thigh lift (thighplasty) at our London clinic is one of a number of surgical procedures used in ‘body contouring’. It is an operation that aims to remove excess fat and skin from around the thigh area to sculpt and improve the overall appearance of the upper legs.
Do you need a thigh lift?
Many individuals find that with the ageing process or following significant weight loss, the thigh area can become loose and saggy, forming horizontal, transverse or oblique rolls. This can cause people to feel self-conscious, limit their choice of clothes and also have an impact on their function and mobility. The majority of individuals wishing to have this type of procedure are candidates for a medial thigh lift, whereby excess skin and fat are removed from the inner part of the thighs.
A discrete proportion of patients experience excess tissues on the outer portion of the thigh, in which case they may be more suitable for a lateral thigh lift. The thigh lift procedure, as with many body contouring procedures, is done under a general anaesthetic, meaning that you will be unconscious throughout the operation and involves an overnight hospital stay.
Mr Ioannis Goutos is an experienced plastic surgeon, with particular interest in body contouring operations, as well as the management of scars and burns. His level of skill allows him to practice a number of both surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures with excellent results. His surgical experience empowers him to fully assess each individual and their treatment goals, and discuss the suitability of each procedure to comprise individualised treatment plans. Each plan will involve consultation, meticulous pre-operative planning, surgery and post-operative care and follow up.

Book nowHow does a thigh lift work?
Before embarking on your thigh lift surgery journey it is essential to undergo an initial consultation and assessment. During this appointment you will be able to discuss any target areas and your overall cosmetic body goals. This will allow your surgeon to recommend the most appropriate procedure(s) based on your body and your aims. In some instances, additional body contouring procedures such as a lower lateral body lift, abdominoplasty or liposuction can be used to better achieve your end goals. During this stage you will also need a pre-operative assessment to ensure that it is safe for you to have a general anaesthetic for the surgery. This will involve looking at your medical history, any medications that you take and some routine medical investigations.
Before the operation begins, your surgeon will take time to carefully mark the areas of skin excess to ensure the removal of equal amounts of tissue from each side, to give you a symmetrical contour. The surgery will then proceed through an incision from the groin area to the knee, which may be straight or oblique. Once excess skin and fat are removed, the remaining tissues are redraped to restore a more natural contour to each thigh. Liposuction can be used during this stage to further sculpt the area, enhancing the benefits of the procedure.
Following your thigh lift surgery, it is recommended to avoid any activity that may put stress on the healing wound to avoid any complications. You may find activities involving sitting or bending can be uncomfortable until the wound has healed. It is recommended to wear an appropriate compressive garment for 6-8 weeks post-operatively to help with the recovery process. This helps to reduce swelling in the thigh area and provide support to the tissues as they heal. It is also advised to avoid any vigorous activity during this time (6-8 weeks) to allow for optimal healing and good long term scar quality.
The majority of individuals who undergo a thigh lift operation will achieve a satisfactory contour, boosting their self-confidence. In a few cases, an additional ‘touch up’ operation may be recommended to give a better final result.

The results of a thigh lift in London typically last for a considerable amount of time, with the longevity varying depending on several factors. On average, patients can expect the results to remain visible for around 5 to 10 years. However, it’s important to note that individual experiences may vary based on factors such as age, lifestyle choices, and overall health. Adhering to a healthy diet and exercise routine can significantly prolong the results of a thigh lift, ensuring that the outcome remains satisfactory for an extended period.
Liposuction can be used in the later stages of the surgery as an adjunct to improve the overall contour of the thigh. Other body contouring procedures, such as a lateral body lift, can also be done within the same procedure. These can all be discussed in more detail during your initial consultation and planning stage.
Most people can return home the day after the operation and return to work after 7-14 days, depending on the nature of your employment. The recovery period will vary depending on each individual, however it is recommended to avoid any strenuous activity or exercise for 6-8 weeks to allow good healing. You will be given full advice and post-operative care, including the advice in regards to supportive compression garments and appropriate follow up appointments.
Any incision in the skin will result in scarring. Following a thigh lift, most people are left with a scar from the groin to the knee, depending on which side the thigh lift has been performed on. If you are prone to adverse scarring, there are additional measures a skilled surgeon can take. For example, careful planning of the incision lines to respect the natural contours of the body, wound closure with tension-relieving measures and good aftercare following the operation. Additional post-operative adjuncts such as silicone, steroid tapes and laser techniques can also be employed to promote good scar quality.
