Laser treatments can be effective in the management of a number of different  skin complaints. There are a variety of different types of laser devices, which each have their own treatment niche.

Erbium lasers emit wavelengths at around 1545nm and this makes them well suited for improving the appearance of scars, wrinkles as well as a number of superficial skin marks. Lasers represent precise and targeted treatments with a good safety profile, which make them a favourable option for many individuals.

Mr Ioannis Goutos is a top plastic surgeon with a special interest in the assessment and treatment of troublesome scars and burns. He has a wealth of experience in caring for individuals wanting cosmetic treatments for a wide variety of conditions, including stubborn or difficult-to-treat lesions.

About this treatment

Erbium fibre lasers work by using a crystal medium to create a concentrated beam of light energy, which is rapidly absorbed by the water in the skin. This makes erbium laser more suited to treating superficial lesions as the laser does not penetrate to the deepest layers of the skin. The high-energy beam is converted into thermal energy in the superficial layers of the skin, which causes controlled damage to the skin cells. This then promotes regeneration of skin and increases the production of collagen, leaving it to appear more even and rejuvenated.

Erbium lasers are best suited at treating the following:

  • Small atrophic scars, including acne scarring or scars from previous herpes simplex infection
  • Sun-related damage, such as pigmented sun spots
  • Superficial lines and wrinkles
  • Freckles and age-related spots that cause irregular pigmentation
  • Stretch marks

Laser treatments are easily done within an outpatient clinic appointment. It is important to have a full assessment of your skin prior to treatment to ensure that you are safely undergoing the most suitable procedure for you, your skin and your treatment goals. Following assessment, the target area of skin will be cleaned using an appropriate, sterile cleaning solution. An experienced clinician will then be able to perform the laser procedure itself. Most people experience some uncomfortable, warm sensations during the laser treatment, but anaesthetic is not typically needed. Cooling packs or a specialised cooling device is used on the skin to ensure comfort during the treatment.

FAQ

We know having medical, surgical or cosmetic treatment can seem daunting and it is natural to have questions. We are here to ensure your comfort and safety at all times. If you are unable to find the answer to your questions below, then please do not hesitate to contact us so we can help.

Laser treatments typically result in some redness, swelling and dryness in the skin for a number of days following the procedure. This is seen to a lesser extent following erbium laser treatments compared to other lasers, as it is more gentle in its action. Lasers also pose a risk of eye damage, so it is important to wear appropriate eye protection throughout the procedure. Additionally, there is a small risk of skin infection associated with laser treatments. This is mitigated through thorough pre-procedure assessment of the skin, use of sterile equipment and good post-treatment skin care.

Erbium lasers are only absorbed in the more superficial layers of the skin. This means that they typically have milder and shorter-lived side effects, but are also only effective in treating more superficial skin problems. For deeper scarring, lines or wrinkles, different lasers, such as carbon dioxide laser, may be more appropriate. Your specialist clinician should be able to guide you to the most appropriate laser type depending on your previous treatments and overall treatment goals.

Erbium lasers are generally less suitable in individuals who are prone to developing keloid scarring and for those with burn-related scarring. Laser treatments are also not recommended for those who have darker skin tones due to the risks of hyperpigmentation after treatment. It is also important to ensure any active infection in the skin is fully resolved prior to laser treatments as this may make existing skin infections worse.

General skin health is important to consider, particularly when considering cosmetic procedures and treatments. Ensuring that you stay well hydrated and avoiding smoking are good ways to maintain good skin health. In relation to laser treatments, it is crucial to avoid any additional irritants to the skin, including products containing fragrances or harsh chemicals. Applying neutral moisturisers on well-healed skin can help promote good skin healing. Laser treatments can make the treated skin much more sensitive to the sun, so it is important to remember appropriate sun protection such as clothing or sun screen (minimum 30 SPF) for up to 6 months following any laser procedures.
