Muscle relaxing injections represent a procedure that can be performed to help reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles as well as improve the outcome of scar management.

This is usually done on the face and commonly in target areas such as:

  • Frown lines on the forehead or between the eyebrows
  • Lines around the eyes (known as ‘crow’s feet)
  • Wrinkles or asymmetry around the mouth and lips
  • Lines on the nose (also referred to as ‘bunny lines’)
  • Neck and jaw muscles

These injections aim to make the skin look smoother and more even to give a rejuvenated and youthful appearance. These injections contain botulinum toxin type A and, despite having ‘toxin’ in the name, are safe to use in aesthetic procedures when sourced and administered by a qualified and experienced clinician.

About this treatment

The botulinum toxin used in muscle relaxing injections is a special protein that helps to reduce the activity in target muscles. Repeated movement of the facial muscles causes lines and wrinkles to appear, so reducing this muscle activity can help to reduce their appearance and provide a rejuvenating effect.  Futhermore, in certain cases this treatment can improve scar outcomes by immobilising muscles responsible for stretching the overlying skin.

Muscle relaxing injections are a non-surgical procedure that can be performed within an outpatient appointment. Following assessment of your target areas and treatment goals, a qualified clinician will prepare the skin by cleaning it using a sterile solution. The toxin is then injected using sterile equipment. The treated skin may be slightly red, swollen or bruised immediately following injections. Your clinician will then give you a list of things to look out for over the next few days, including any signs of infection or adverse reaction.

When undergoing any cosmetic procedure, it is recommended to ensure good general skin care. This includes regular moisturisation with a non-perfumed cream or ointment and regular sun protection, either with appropriate clothing or application of sunscreen. Following any injections or treatment, the skin should be kept clean and dry until it is healed, and it is generally recommended to avoid using any products that contain harsh chemicals or perfumes.

In addition to treating lines and wrinkles, muscle relaxing ‘botox’ injections are also sometimes used to treat and reduce excessive sweating (medically referred to as ‘hyperhidrosis’). The botox is injected into the site of the sweat glands and can have effects lasting 6-12 months. Furthermore, thse injections have also been used in the medical treatment of bruxism (i.e teeth grinding).

FAQ

We know having medical, surgical or cosmetic treatment can seem daunting and it is natural to have questions. We are here to ensure your comfort and safety at all times. If you are unable to find the answer to your questions below, then please do not hesitate to contact us so we can help.

When correctly administered, muscle relaxing injections can be very safe and effective treatments for many individuals. There are small risks of bleeding, infection and tenderness following the injection, but these are short-lived and any bruising or redness will resolve in a few days. However, if you receive botox injections that are not correctly sourced or administered, longer term adverse effects can occur, including poor cosmetic results or weakening of other muscles. Therefore, it is recommended to seek assessment and treatment from an experienced and qualified healthcare professional.

Most individuals see good results following one treatment; nevertheless, they only last for 3-4 months. With repeated treatments the effects can be longer lasting. The number of treatments will depend on the response and goals of the individual, as well as any other procedures are being carried out.

It is generally safe to have other aesthetic procedures performed as long as there is adequate time for the skin to heal between treatments. Sometimes alternatives such as filler injections or needling are needed for deeper lines and wrinkles. An experienced clinician should be able to guide you as to which procedure, or combination of procedures, is most suitable for you to achieve your cosmetic treatment goals.

Injections do not typically result in scarring. Although there is a tiny break in the skin from the needle, this will usually heal within a few hours. Any resultant bruising or redness should resolve over the following few days, without leaving any long term marks to the skin.
