Filler injections are a common type of non-surgical treatment used for a number of aesthetic complaints.

This includes lines and wrinkles on the face as well as depressed and acne scarring. Filler injections are less invasive than alternative surgical treatments and can be performed within an outpatient appointment with little to no downtime.

The contents of the filler injection will vary depending on the aims of the treatment. Different types of injections will give differing results in terms of texture, ‘softness’ and longevity. It is advised to discuss your cosmetic goals with your provider prior to having any procedures, to ensure that you receive the right treatment for you and your skin.

Mr Ioannis Goutos is a highly qualified and well respected London-based plastic surgeon. He offers a number of both surgical and non-surgical treatments, alongside meticulous assessments and bespoke treatment plans for each individual.

About this treatment

During an initial consultation, your expert clinician should be able to assess your skin and listen to your concerns and cosmetic goals. They will then be able to suggest appropriate procedure(s) and a treatment plan. Filler injections can be helpful in a number of aesthetic issues, including:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Deeper lines and wrinkles
  • Thin lips
  • Loss of jaw definition
  • Areas of ‘sagging’, particularly in the face such as around the cheeks and chin
  • Acne scarring
  • Atrophic or depressed scars

The idea of fillers is that they can increase the volume underneath the skin in target areas. They can also improve the hydration within the skin and promote the production of collagen. This helps the skin to become ‘plumper’ and have a smoother contour, make it appear more even and youthful.

There are a number of different types of filler injections, based on what they are made of. Common varieties include:

  • Hyaluronic acid – this is one of the most commonly used types of filler injections and is effective in most cases, including the treatment of scars. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that is already found in the body and is a soft type of connective tissue that is normally present in the skin
  • Polylactic acid – this is a synthetic injection that works by promoting collagen production within the skin. As such, sometimes it can take a few months to appreciate the final effects.
  • Calcium hydroxylapatite – this is made up of a mineral compound that naturally occurs in the body. It is generally regarded to have a lower risk of adverse or allergic reactions compared to other filler injections, and is known to give natural-looking results.
  • Fat-for a number of indications using the patient’s own fat as a filler material is ideal.  The procedure involves harvesting fat using a small opening in the skin and processing it before injection.
Your clinician will be able to select the most appropriate filler based on your specific cosmetic goals and personal preferences.

Filler injections can be performed in a short clinic appointment. The skin is first cleaned using an antiseptic solution. A small needle is then inserted under the skin in the target area, and the filler is slowly injected underneath the skin.

It is important to seek out an experienced clinician to ensure that appropriately sourced materials are used. Use of a skilled clinician will also improve the standard of your final results and reduce the risk of any nerve or blood vessel damage, especially if having treatments on the face.

FAQ

We know having medical, surgical or cosmetic treatment can seem daunting and it is natural to have questions. We are here to ensure your comfort and safety at all times. If you are unable to find the answer to your questions below, then please do not hesitate to contact us so we can help.

Filler injections are a minimally invasive procedure and are generally considered to be safe with a low risk profile. Most individuals can expect a small degree of discomfort, swelling and redness at the injection site following treatment. This should resolve within a day or so. There is also a risk of infection, which is minimized with the use of properly sterile equipment and technique. Rarely, individuals may experience an allergic reaction to a component within synthetic fillers. If having injections in the face, there is a theoretical risk of nerve or blood vessel damage, however this is avoided through the technique of a trained and experienced practitioner.

Different types of fillers will have different durations of effect. This can range from 3-18 months for synthetic fillers. Injections can be repeated or combined with other cosmetic procedures to give longer lasting results.

It is generally recommended to keep the skin clean and dry, and to avoid any cosmetic products for 24 hours following filler injections. The skin may be slightly more sensitive to the sun, so avoiding direct sunlight can be helpful. Once the skin is healed, general measures for good skin health are advised. These include: drinking plenty of water, avoiding alcohol/smoking and pollutant exposure. Moisturisation with gentle skincare products and good sun protection are also essential.

There are a number of non-invasive cosmetic procedures that can be used to improve the appearance of scarring or to give general restorative effects to the skin. These include needling, laser treatments and muscle relaxing injections. For those who are interested in more definitive, surgical treatments, subcision or scar revision may be considered. Following assessment, your clinician should be able to recommend the best procedure for you. They may also advise on a number of treatments in order to achieve optimal results.
