Q-Switched Nd: YAG Laser at our London clinic can be used as one of multiple modalities to treat different skin complaints and cosmetic problems.

In particular, Q switched Nd:YAG or Pico lasers are highly effective skincare treatments for reducing the appearance of flat, pigmented lesions such as freckles and sun spots. Q-switch lasers can also be used to treat age spots and certain types of birthmarks, as well as frequently being used in the removal of tattoos.

The technology works by emitting short, high-energy pulses, which have restorative effects in the skin, to target pigmented conditions. Laser treatments are a good non-surgical option for those wanting to enhance their beauty, making their skin appear clearer and brighter, as they are targeted therapies which are both effective for rejuvenation and have a good safety profile.

Mr Ioannis Goutos is an experienced and high respected plastic surgeon, with a wide array of experience in consulting, treating and caring for those with skin problems. He takes pride in his full assessment of both the physical and psychological factors involved in every case in order to comprise the optimal treatment plan for each individual. He is adept and accomplished in performing a number of surgical and non-surgical procedures, including a wide variety of laser treatments.

What is Q-Switched Nd: YAG Laser?

Q switched Nd:YAG lasers/pico are similar to vascular Nd:YAG lasers, but they are modified to produce very short pulses of high-intensity beams making it better suited to treating lesions that are superficial in the skin.

These lasers generate pulses with duration in the nano or pico second pulses. There are a number of different sub-types of pico laser which have different crystal mediums to create the laser beams, hence produce slightly different wavelengths. These can be used to effectively target different types of pigmented lesions.

Both lasers are effective at treating the following:

  • Freckles
  • Sun spots
  • Age-related dark spots
  • Areas of hyperpigmentation resulting from injury or infection (e.g. acne)
  • Tattoo removal

The laser beams produced target the areas of pigment under the skin and help to break them down using bursts of acoustic (i.e sound like) energy. Your body’s natural immune system will then be able to clear away the break-down products giving a clearer appearance to the skin. Additionally, some of the thermal (i.e heat) energy from the laser can cause microscopic damage in the skin cells, which helps to promote skin healing, regeneration and collagen production.

There are a number of different laser treatments, each tailored to suit different types of skin and skin lesions. A detailed assessment and discussion with an experienced clinician is essential to ensure that you receive the best treatment option for your cosmetic goals.

FAQs about Q-Switched Nd: YAG Laser

We know having medical, surgical or cosmetic treatment can seem daunting and it is natural to have questions. We are here to ensure your comfort and safety at all times. If you are unable to find the answer to your questions below, then please do not hesitate to contact us so we can help.

Most patients describe a warm sensation during the laser procedure; some will experience mild pain and redness which settles soon after. There is a small risk of infection which is reduced with the use of sterile equipment and good post-procedural care. These treatments need to be carefully tailored in individuals with darker skin tones.

There are a number of different laser modalities, each with their own treatment niche. The type of treatment that you need will be dependent on your skin type, skin lesions being treated and your end goals. Each comes with a slightly different side effect profile, and it is important to fully explore each option with a specialist prior to proceeding with any cosmetic treatments.

Most individuals require 3-6 treatments to get good results. This will depend on the type of skin lesion being treated and the response of the individual. There should be adequate ‘rest’ periods for your skin between treatments to allow for the skin to heal each time.

Yes, Q-Switch Laser treatment is generally suitable for all skin types. The q-switch laser technology utilises short pulses of high-intensity light to target specific pigments in the skin, such as dark spots, tattoos, and birthmarks. Unlike other laser treatments, the q-switch laser has adjustable settings that allow it to be customised based on the individual’s skin type and concerns. This versatility ensures that the treatment can be safely and effectively used on a wide range of skin tones and textures. We always recommend a consultation at Goutos London, so we can assess your specific skin type and determine the most appropriate treatment plan for you.

Yes, q-switch laser treatment typically requires a minimal amount of downtime. The procedure itself is non-invasive and generally well-tolerated by patients. After the treatment, some individuals may experience mild redness or swelling in the treated area, which usually subsides within a few hours to a couple of days. However, it is important to note that the extent of downtime can vary depending on the specific condition being treated and the individual’s skin type. Our expert, Mr Goutos, will provide personalised advice regarding post-treatment care and expected downtime.

There are a number of non-surgical procedures that can prove effective in skin regeneration, including needling and injections, as well as a wide variety in the types of laser treatments available. A specialist plastic surgeon should be able to guide you on the risks and benefits of each treatment option, as well as which would be most effective for you and your skin.
