Face by Mr Ioannis Goutos
Tired eyes
As we age, there are a number of changes that can occur in the face and around the eyes that can lead to the eyes appearing ‘tired’.
This can be due to a number of factors:
- Dark circles: these appear as darker areas of skin just underneath the eyes. They occur due to natural thinning of the skin that occurs with age. Dark circles can become more prominent with chronic sun exposure (causing darkening of the skin) or with changes in the distribution of fat around the face making the area under the eyes appear more hollow.
- Looser skin: as we age the skin can lose its elasticity, causing it to sag over time. This can effect both the upper and lower eyelid.
- Droopy eyelids: the muscles in the eyelid can drop overtime, meaning that the upper eyelid sits lower over the eye itself.
- Lines & wrinkles: reduced elasticity in the skin and use of the muscles in the face in facial expressions can lead to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles, commonly at the side of the eyes which are referred to as ‘crow’s feet’
In addition to the factors above, there is generally a loss of volume in the skin of the face with age. This can exaggerate the effects listed above and contribute to the overall ‘tired’ look of the eyes.

There is a variety of treatment options to consider if you want to improve the appearance around the eyes. Initially, there are a number of lifestyle changes that can be made which can help to maintain healthy and youthful looking skin. These include practicing good sleep hygiene, adequate hydration and a healthy diet and stopping smoking. Having a good skincare regime that includes and regular moisturisation and sun protection can also help to slow the ageing process of the skin.
For those seeking more marked and immediate results, there are several surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures that are available. These aim to improve the appearance of the eyelids and the skin around the eyes to help them appear brighter, rejuvenated and more youthful. The right procedure for you will depend on which features are present in your skin, your treatment goals and your own preferences. An experienced clinician should be able to guide you as to the most appropriate procedure or procedures for you.
Possible treatment options include:
- Muscle relaxing injections: these targeted injections use a substance, which can relax the underlying muscles to give smoother and lifted appearance to the treated area.
- Filler injections: can be placed around the eyes to give a plumper and more youthful contour to treated skin
- Needling: involves treating the skin with a device that contains a number of ‘micro-needles’ to promote general rejuvenation and smoothing of the treated skin
- Laser treatment: a targeted, non-invasive therapy that can help to reduce the appearance of park patches and promote regeneration in the skin.
- Eyelid lift: also known as ‘blepharoplasty’, is a surgical procedure whereby excess fat and skin can be removed from the upper or lower eye lid, or both, to eliminate the ‘sagging’ appearance.
- Facial/brow lift: aims to surgically tighten any loose skin around the upper face or brow region, resulting in a more youthful and ‘lifted’ appearance of the skin.
