Fat transfer is a common procedure used for a number of aesthetic complaints. This includes lines and wrinkles on the face as well as volume loss and areas of irregularities in the skin. Fat transfer otherwise known as lipomodeliing or fat injection can be performed within an outpatient appointment with little downtime for small areas.

Treatment of significant volume loss or larger areas most likely needs to be performed in a hospital setting under sedation or general anaesthetic.  The first part of the procedure involves liposuction to an area of excess body fat like the lower tummy or thigh; following this, the fat is cleaned and processed in a sterile kit.  The pure fat is then injected using small syringes in various planes under the skin in order to add volume to areas of depression or irregularity in the body. It is advised to discuss your cosmetic goals with your provider prior to having any procedures, to ensure that you receive the right treatment for you and your skin.

Mr Ioannis Goutos is a highly qualified and well respected London-based plastic surgeon. He offers a number of both surgical and non-surgical treatments, alongside meticulous assessments and bespoke treatment plans for each individual.

What is Fat Transfer For Contouring / Lipomodelling / Fat Injections?

During an initial consultation, your expert clinician should be able to assess your skin and listen to your concerns and cosmetic goals. They will then be able to suggest appropriate procedure(s) and a treatment plan. Lipomodelling can be helpful in a number of aesthetic issues, including:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Deeper lines and wrinkles
  • Volume loss under the skin following trauma
  • Enlargement of bodily areas like the breast
  • Atrophic or depressed scars

The idea of fat transfer is that it can increase the volume underneath the skin in target areas. It can also improve the long term quality of scarring and surrounding skin by promoting the production of collagen. This helps the skin to become ‘plumper’ and have a smoother contour, making it appear more even and youthful.

There are a number of different types of fat injections, based on how big the injected fat particles are.  Most common varieties include:

  • Macro fat.  This refers to large particles being injected mostly used when large quantities of fat injection are needed for example in breast enlargement.
  • Micro fat.  This type represents intermediate sized fat parcels; these are typically injected under scarred areas over the body e.g. in cases of traumatic loss of volume.
  • Nano fat.  This is the smallest in size fat particle.  It is the most frequently subtype of lipomodelling for concerns affecting the facial region including lines and wrinkles.
Your clinician will be able to select the most appropriate fat transfer subtype based on your specific cosmetic goals and personal preferences.

Lipomodelling injections can be performed as part of a daycase appointment. The skin around the target for lipomodelling as well as the fat harvest area is first cleaned using an antiseptic solution. The fields are then injected with a local anaesthetic solution, which results in numbness within a few minutes. You may feel some pushing and pulling during the procedure but not discomfort or pain. After the fat has been harvested and processed, a specialised, blunt needle is then used under the scar and fat is injected in a fan-like pattern.  Multiple access incisions are frequently used to treat larger and more complex areas.

Following fat transfer, you may experience mild discomfort, bruising and swelling for about a week Regular pain killers can be helpful; nevertheless most patients find the recovery to be brief.

It is important to seek out an experienced clinician to ensure that appropriately sourced fat harvesting and processing kits are used. Choice of a skilled clinician will also improve the standard of your final results and reduce the risk of any nerve or blood vessel damage, especially if having treatments on the face.

Frequently Asked Questions about Fat Transfer For Contouring / Lipomodelling / Fat Injections

We know having medical, surgical or cosmetic treatment can seem daunting and it is natural to have questions. We are here to ensure your comfort and safety at all times. If you are unable to find the answer to your questions below, then please do not hesitate to contact us so we can help.

Fat injections are generally considered to be safe with a low risk profile. Most individuals can expect a small degree of discomfort, swelling and redness at the injection as well as the fat harvest site following treatment, which should resolve within a week. There is also a risk of infection, which is minimized with the use of properly sterile equipment and technique. If having injections in the face, there is a theoretical risk of nerve or blood vessel damage, however this is avoided through the technique of a trained and experienced practitioner.

Lipomodelling is considered a long-lasting treatment provided no major fluctations to your weight occur after the treatment. Fat injections can be repeated or combined with other cosmetic procedures to give longer lasting results and help you achieve the desired outcome.

It is generally recommended to keep the dressings clean and dry until you attend your first follow up/wound check appointment with your surgeon. The skin may be slightly more sensitive to the sun, so avoiding direct sunlight can be helpful. Once the skin is healed, general measures for good skin health are advised, including adequate hydration, avoiding alcohol/smoking to mention few. Moisturisation with gentle skincare products and good sun protection are also essential.

There are a number of non-invasive cosmetic procedures that can be used to improve the appearance of volume defects and address irregularities in the skin. These include filler injections, needling and laser treatments. For those who are interested in more definitive, surgical treatments, body other contouring procedures or scar revision may be considered.
