A ’monsplasty’, also known as a ‘pubic lift’, is a specific type of body contouring procedure offered at Goutos London, which aims to improve the appearance of the pubic area.

What is monsplasty?

There is a natural layer of fatty tissue over the pubic bone, just above the upper part of the vulva/scrotum, which can be more pronounced in certain individuals. This is known as the ‘mons pubis’. Some individuals may feel self-conscious and seek a surgical option to remove any excess fat or tissue with an operation. This area can also become more pronounced due to sagging of the skin and the build up of additional fatty tissue as a result of ageing or following significant weight changes.

This treatment can often be completed alongside other body contouring procedures, such as a tummy tuck, mini tummy tuck, or panniculectomy, in order to achieve a smoother and more defined appearance to the lower abdomen. For some individuals, this can also give good functional benefits to improve both comfort, mobility and hygiene.

Mr Goutos is an expert plastic surgeon with a special interest in body contouring procedures. He takes particular pride in helping individuals to reach their aesthetic and functional goals, especially following significant weight loss. Mr Goutos is renowned for his meticulous approach, ensuring that each treatment plan is bespoke according to the needs of the individual client, and encompasses pre-operative planning and assessment, surgical and post-operative care and follow up.

How does pubic lift surgery work?

If you are considering pubic lift surgery, it is vital to complete a consultation with an experienced plastic surgeon. During this time, you will be able to have a detailed discussion about your treatment goals. Following an examination, your surgeon will be able to outline the treatment options and recommendations for you. Prior to the operation, you will need to undergo a pre-operative assessment, which typically involves a basic medical examination, talking through your medical history and any medications you are taking, alongside some simple medical tests. This can help you and your surgeon decide whether your procedure will be completed under a general anaesthetic (where you will be unconscious throughout the procedure) or with a local anaesthetic +/- sedation (where you will be awake but won’t be able to feel the operation). A general anaesthetic may be more appropriate for certain cases, especially if the monsplasty is being completed alongside other body contouring procedures.

Before the surgery, your surgeon will take time to carefully mark the area of the operation, to ensure that the final results are symmetrical and even. Once the anaesthetic is administered, the surgeon will make an incision just above the mons area, through which excess skin and fatty tissue can be removed. Sometimes liposuction is also used at this stage to improve the overall contour and achieve the desired result. Following this, the overlying skin envelope is tightened and closed using sutures.

Following your operation, you may need a short period of observation (particularly if you have had a general anaesthetic), however most patients are able to go home on the same day. You will be given all the necessary aftercare advice for your wound, including wound dressings and pain killers. It is also recommended to wear a supportive compression garment following the operation, to promote optimal healing of the surgical wound. Most patients require 1-2 weeks of rest, followed by a gradual build up back to normal activities. Strenuous movements or physical activity should be avoided for 6-8 weeks to ensure smooth healing. If you are particularly prone to unfavourable scarring, your surgeon may also recommend the use of additional adjuncts during the healing phase to ensure healthy and aesthetic scar formation.

As with all body contouring procedures, there will be obvious changes to the contour of the lower abdomen and pubic area, however it may take up to several months, once the area has completely healed, to be able to appreciate the final results.

Frequently Asked Questions about Monsplasty

We know having medical, surgical or cosmetic treatment can seem daunting and it is natural to have questions. We are here to ensure your comfort and safety at all times. If you are unable to find the answer to your questions below, then please do not hesitate to contact us so we can help.

As with any surgical procedure, there are general risks such as post-operative swelling, bleeding and infection. There are further risks associated with having a general anaesthetic, including having a blood clot. These risks are all discussed prior to your surgery, and steps are taken to minimise these risks as much as possible through a thorough pre-operative assessment.

During a monsplasty procedure, which is designed to reduce excess fat and tissue in the mons pubis area, patients can expect a combination of local anaesthesia and sedation to ensure comfort throughout the surgery. Our surgeon will make a small incision to remove the excess skin and fat, sculpting the area for a smoother appearance. The procedure typically lasts about one to two hours, depending on the individual case. Post-operative care includes managing swelling and discomfort with prescribed pain medication, as well as following specific guidelines for recovery, such as avoiding strenuous activities for several weeks. Most patients report satisfaction with their results, experiencing improved body contour and increased confidence in their appearance after healing is complete.

Monsplasty surgery, which is a procedure aimed at reshaping and reducing excess skin and fat in the mons pubis area, typically takes about one to two hours to complete. The duration can vary depending on the individual’s specific anatomy, the extent of correction required, and whether any additional procedures are performed concurrently. Patients can usually expect to spend some time in recovery afterward, but the overall surgical process is relatively quick compared to more extensive surgeries. As always, it’s important for patients to consult with their surgeon for a more personalised estimate based on their unique circumstances.

During a pubic lift, you’ll be given local anaesthetic and possibly sedation, ensuring you feel no pain or discomfort during the procedure. After the surgery, you may experience some pain and discomfort in the area for about three weeks.

It is generally recommended to rest for 1-2 weeks, during which there may be some discomfort from the surgical wound. Simple pain killers and good wound care can optimise this period. Following this, you can slowly build up your level of activity, including returning to work.

Strenuous or vigorous activity should be avoided for 6-8 weeks to avoid placing any unnecessary strain on the surgical wound, which can lead to unfavourable scarring, opening of the wound or further complications.

Patients can expect to see a flatter, more contoured appearance of the mons pubis, which can enhance overall body proportions and boost self-confidence, especially in clothing or swimwear. Post-operative results typically include improved aesthetics with minimal scarring, as incisions are strategically placed. Most individuals report high satisfaction rates after the procedure, noting not only physical changes but also an increase in comfort during daily activities. However, it is essential to have realistic expectations and understand that individual results may vary based on factors such as skin elasticity and adherence to post-operative care instructions. You will be able to see some results immediately following the surgery, however the final outcome may take up to a few months to appreciate. This is to allow time for the tissues to fully heal and settle following the operation.

As with any surgery, an incision in the skin is necessary to perform the operation, and this will ultimately result in a scar as the skin heals. However, steps are taken to ensure that any scarring is minimal, such as careful pre-operative planning, using the natural creases in the skin to create the incisions and good post-operative aftercare. All of these factors can help to reduce the appearance of scars.

Monsplasty can be quite effective for individuals seeking aesthetic or functional improvements in the mons pubis area. The effectiveness of the procedure largely depends on the individual’s specific goals, the skill of the surgeon, and the patient’s adherence to post-operative care instructions. Patients often report satisfaction with the results, noting improvements in appearance, comfort, and self-confidence. However, as with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks and complications, such as infection, scarring, or dissatisfaction with the aesthetic outcome, so it is crucial to consult with an experienced plastic surgeon.
