Liposuction in London with Mr Ioannis Goutos is a surgical technique that is used to remove pockets of fat deposits that may be difficult to get rid of using diet and exercise alone.

What is liposuction?

It is not an alternative to general weight loss, and is very different to gastric sleeve or ‘bariatric’ surgery. Liposuction uses targeted instruments to remove specific areas of fat, commonly in the abdomen, hips and buttocks, or where there are areas of uneven fat distribution. This procedure can also be used in conjunction with body contouring surgeries (such as a tummy tuck, arm lift or thigh lift) to achieve more detailed sculpting and optimal contouring effects.

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that can be performed done using a local anaesthetic for small areas; this means that you will not be able to feel pain during the procedure.

A sedative can also be given so that you feel sleepy and more comfortable throughout. For larger areas, liposuction needs to be done under a general anaesthetic, meaning that you will be unconscious throughout the operation. It is usually  a day case procedure, meaning that you are able to go home the same day. In some instances, a longer observation period is needed, so some people need to stay in hospital for one night.

Mr Ioannis Goutos is an experienced London-based plastic surgeon with a special interest in body contouring procedures and looking after individuals with scars and burns. He has an excellent clinical and academic reputation and is well placed to provide full assessment, treatments and post-operative care to his patients. Mr Goutos places particular emphasis on the physical and psychodynamic factors affecting his patients to form tailored treatment plans for each individual.

How does liposuction work?

Liposuction works on the basis of removing fat cells under the surface of the skin. Once removed, the skin moulds around the new contour of the treated region. This can be effective in a number of areas of the body, including:

  • Chest (including use in breast reduction)
  • Back
  • Upper arms
  • Abdomen
  • Hips
  • Buttocks
  • Thighs

The cosmetic results of liposuction are long-lasting as long as you don’t have any further dramatic weight changes.

Before undergoing liposuction, it is important to have an initial consultation, including discussing all of your cosmetic goals. This will allow your clinician to recommend the most suitable treatment for you and your aims. You will then need to undergo a thorough pre-operative assessment to make sure that you are medically fit to undergo the surgery and a general anaesthetic or sedation.

Prior to the procedure, your surgeon will mark the areas of skin to be treated. Once under anaesthetic or sedation, the surgeon will make small incisions over the marked areas. They then insert a long hollow tube (known as a cannula) under the skin into the layer of fat. A sterile solution with anaesthetic is then injected to help break apart the fat cells, which are then sucked back up the cannula removing them. Sometimes this can be augmented with the use of ultrasound, laser or vibration-type motion. Once complete, the cannula is removed and the surgical incision is closed. If you are having treatments on both sides of the body (i.e. on the arms or thighs) these are done during the same procedure to ensure symmetrical results.

Following the operation, there may be some discomfort, bruising and swelling. This is reduced with good post-operative care, which involves wearing appropriate compressive garments over the healing tissues. It is important to know that it takes a few months for all of the treated areas to fully settle and for you to see your final results.

Frequently Asked Questions about liposuction

We know having medical, surgical or cosmetic treatment can seem daunting and it is natural to have questions. We are here to ensure your comfort and safety at all times. If you are unable to find the answer to your questions below, then please do not hesitate to contact us so we can help.

As with any surgical procedure, there are inherent risks of swelling, bruising, infection and blood clots. These are reduced through good pre-operative planning and post-procedure care. In addition, liposuction can cause pockets of fluid accumulation which require drainage. This is more likely if there are larger areas being treated, or if you are undergoing multiple surgical procedures. The full risks of liposuction surgery will be discussed with you in advance of your procedure.

When considering liposuction in London, patients can generally expect significant body contouring results, particularly in areas such as the abdomen, thighs, hips, and arms. The procedure effectively removes stubborn fat deposits that are resistant to diet and exercise, leading to a more sculpted appearance. Many patients report a noticeable improvement in their body shape within a few weeks post-surgery, with final results becoming apparent after several months as swelling subsides. It’s important to note that while liposuction can enhance body proportions, it is not a weight-loss solution; maintaining a healthy lifestyle is crucial for long-lasting results.

Liposuction involves the removal of fat, so there will be a very small amount of weight loss following surgery. However, liposuction cannot be used as an alternative for general weight management, since it targets specific pockets of uneven fat distribution. Systematic weight loss is achieved through diet and exercise measures, or in more extreme cases may warrant gastric sleeve surgery. It is important to discuss this with your surgeon before having liposuction to ensure that your expectations are in line with achievable results.

Liposuction in London is an appealing option for individuals who are generally healthy but struggle with localised fat deposits that are resistant to diet and exercise. It is particularly suitable for those who have a stable weight and realistic expectations about the results, as liposuction is not a weight-loss solution but rather a body contouring procedure. Ideal candidates often include both men and women looking to enhance their body shape, such as those wanting to target areas like the abdomen, thighs, or arms. Additionally, individuals preparing for significant lifestyle changes or events may consider liposuction to boost their confidence and motivation. However, it’s essential for potential patients to consult with a qualified surgeon to assess their suitability based on personal health factors and aesthetic goals.

Following your liposuction procedure, you should be able to go home the same day. If you have had a general anaesthetic or sedation, you will need someone to drive you home and keep an eye on you for the first 24-48 hours. You may have some pain, swelling and bruising following the operation, which should settle in the first week or two. Compression garments can help to reduce swelling and promote good wound healing. Most people can return to work after a few days and return to their normal activities and more strenuous exercise after 4-6 weeks.

Any surgical incision through the skin will leave a scar. In liposuction, the incisions and resulting scars are usually small. If you are having large or multiple areas of treatment, you may have more scarring in line with the incisions that the surgeon will need to make. Noticeable scarring can be reduced with a number of techniques from your surgeon, including placing the incisions along the natural creases of the skin, using tension-relieving techniques to close the surgical wounds and ensure good post-operative care to give high quality scar formation.
