What is a skin graft?
A skin graft is a surgical procedure where healthy skin is taken from one part of the body, known as the donor site, and placed onto a graft site where skin has been damaged or removed.
Skin grafts are commonly used to:
- Cover wounds and skin loss
- Help damaged areas heal properly
- Treat skin cancer or severe sun damage
- Improve function and appearance after injury
For the procedure to be a success, it is important to pick the correct donor site, where the skin is healthy. The size of the graft needed can impact the length of treatment time.
Types of skin grafts
There are different types of skin graft procedures depending on the amount of skin needed and the site that is being treated, etc. These are known as ‘split-thickness skin grafts’ or ‘full-thickness skin grafts’. Common locations for the skin graft donor site include the abdomen, thigh and buttock areas.
Split-thickness skin graft
A split-thickness skin graft uses the top layer of skin, including the epidermis and part of the dermis. These grafts are often taken from the thigh or legs and are commonly used for larger wounds.
Full-thickness skin graft
A full-thickness skin graft includes all the layers of skin and is usually used in smaller, more visible areas where appearance and texture are important.
Your personal donor site can be confirmed by your plastic surgeon once your needs have been discussed.
Before the procedure
Before surgery, your surgeon will explain the treatment plan, discuss risks, and ask you to sign a consent form. If you have any questions regarding your procedure, this is the best time to voice them. It is a bit of a cliché, but there are no silly questions when it comes to medical procedures.
You may receive specific instructions about:
- Eating and medication before surgery
- Caring for the donor area and graft site
- Recovery expectations and healing time
Your overall health and the type of wound being treated will influence the procedure and recovery process. This is why your plastic surgeon should always talk you through the details before the skin graft procedure, especially as you will need to take some time off post-treatment.
During skin graft surgery
Skin graft surgery is usually performed in a hospital or at a very trusted clinic, such as at our very own Goutos London, located in central London. You will be given local or general anaesthetic or sedation depending on the graft size and location, and then the surgeon gets to work.
Once the skin graft is ready for completion, it is secured using stitches or dressings, and firm pressure may be applied to help the graft remain intact while new blood vessels develop.
Most skin grafts require a protective dressing over both the graft and donor site. This is usually recommended simply to keep both sites safe from infection or getting caught on your clothing, etc.
Recovery and healing process
The full healing process can take several weeks, depending on the size and location of the graft. However, you have to take around a week off work, even if you work in an office location that isn’t too strenuous.
Patients may experience:
- Swelling and discomfort
- Mild bleeding or bruising
- Changes in skin texture or appearance
- Scars at the donor area or graft site
You may be advised to keep the arm raised or leg raised to reduce swelling and protect the graft, once again depending on the graft location. One thing is for sure, as long as the plastic surgeon is experienced with performing skin graft surgery, like Mr Ioannis Goutos, they will know all the necessary tricks to help with the healing process.
Caring for the grafted skin
Once the treatment is complete, it is very important to maintain good aftercare to help the graft heal successfully.
Patients should:
- Follow all care instructions carefully
- Keep dressings clean and dry
- Avoid rubbing or placing pressure on the grafted skin
- Protect the area from sun exposure
Nursing staff and your doctor will provide further information and support during recovery. So once again, we need to reiterate that you must follow the information word for word.
